Ceramics crack most often due to drops or thermal shock. Thermal shock is caused when ceramics heat up very rapidly, or when parts of the ceramic heat unevenly. These feet are designed to raise the grill off the counter to allow airflow underneath it, which prevents the heat from being sapped by the surface the grill is sitting on. This allows the ceramics to heat evenly so that the base of the grill doesn't crack.
