Homemade Bourbon Brownies on the Smoker

People are always astonished when they hear about this recipe. "What do you mean you put bourbon in your brownies?", is a refrain I've heard many times when I mention this. And I am someone that doesn't even drink Bourbon normally.

Below are the items and ingredients you'll need:

  • 8x8 Baking Dish
  • Two Mixing Bowls
  • Whisk
  • Cooking Spray for Greasing the Baking Dish

Dry Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2/3 cup cocoa powder, sifted if lumpy
  • 1/2 cup powdered sugar, sifted if lumpy
  • 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  • 3/4 teaspoons sea salt

Wet Ingredients

  • 2 large eggs
  • 1/2 cup vegetable/canola oil
  • 1/4 cup Bourbon (Recommended, Four Roses Small Batch)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

1. Pre-heat the grill to 350 degrees.

2.  Combine the dry ingredients into a bowl and mix until thoroughly combined.

3. In a separate bowl, combine the wet ingredients until thoroughly combined.

4. Slowly combine the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients and mix until just combined.

5. Pour the batter into an 8x8 greased baking dish. The batter will be thick, as these are fudgy brownies, not cakey brownies.

6. Bake for 40-50 mins, until you are able to stick a toothpick into the center of the pan and pull it out clean.

7. Allow the brownies to cool before serving.

Tips

This recipe also works great in the oven! You don't need to smoke these brownies or bake them on the grill, it's just another way to add flavor to them.

If you don't feel like making the brownies from scratch, it is also possible to simply swap out the water in any pre-mixed brownies, and follow the recipe on the box. Most recipes call for 2 tablespoons of water, you can either replace that 1 to 1 with bourbon, or if you want a more potent flavor, I frequently use 1/4 or 1/2 a cup of bourbon to the mix. Note, the more you add, the less structure the brownie will have.

During cooking and baking, while some alcohol does evaporate off, typically a large proportion of it will remain. Keep this in mind when serving these to guests.
